Make your own inkjet coating for fabric!
Longtime art buddy Barbara Matthiessen and I are really excited to share a recent discovery. This will be especially interesting to those who print on specialty fabrics and have had trouble finding Bubble Jet Set 2000.
Barbara and I have been working with Earth Safe Finishes products recently, a line of environmentally safe colorants (like an ink or dye), paints, and media. One of the products is a no-VOC (volatile organic compound) fabric medium called Fabric Magic, which can be mixed with the colorants and water, aloe gel, or shaving cream to create fabric inks, dyes, or paints.
Long story short(er): A few drops of Fabric Magic mixed with water, can also be used as an inkjet fixative on fabric!
Barbara has conducted the initial tests on this, since I've been with my mom in the hospital and rehab center, but we'd like to include YOU in a test team, if you're interested.
The first 25 people who respond to this will receive a bottle of Fabric Magic (for the price of shipping) and instructions, so the methodology will be the same throughout the team. When your tests are completed and results are returned, I'll send you a signed mini Threadography as a "thank you." Results will be posted here on my blog.
The goal is to test the Fabric Magic recipe with as many different printers and printer inks as possible to establish the versatility of this technique.
No, neither of us are employees of Earth Safe Finishes. We are just product development specialists in the quilting and craft industries, as well as artists who love to print on fabrics not available commercially coated.

I have chemical sensitivities
to many products - would love to

As someone who is extremely sensitive to most chemical due to environmental illness, I would be most interested in trying this product. Especially since my recent work seems to be dictating more and more use of photos on fabric!!

I would be happy to test. I print photos on fabric to use on quilts. I also dye fabric using MX dyes. I have 2 Epson's; 1 dye, 1 pigment and two Canons; 1 Large format and 1 all-in-one.

I'm comment #4,567.231 BUT I'd like to know the ratio of Fabric Magic to water you have planned. Sounds like this stuff is not only environmentally sound but more cost effective than Bubble Jet Set and similar items. Also, I am hoping it doesn't change the hand of the fabric.

I have just gotten home after visiting my Mum for Mother's Day (I live in Australia where today, 10 May is Mother's Day) and so am late reading your message. From the number of messages left, I am way too late to get a free bottle of Fabric Magic from you, but if you could tell me where to buy it from in the US, then I can order some to be sent over here to try it out. Or, if you sent it to me, I could post you back the cost of the Fabric Magic and the postage to Australia. I have made one memory quilt (which featured 40+ photos printed on fabric) and plan to make more. Thanks for letting us all know about your experiments. A cheaper way of printing photos on fabric would be just wonderful. Hi this sounds very interesting. Would it be something that can be applied after printing or would the fabric need to be pretreated?

I'm not one of the first 25 and even yesterday we too late, but since you are asking for more comments I would like information on this too. BJS has not worked for me even when I follow the instructions to the letter and my samples made years ago had faded into purple. Yes, I'm ready for something new.
